DES MOINES, Iowa — Habitat for Humanity hosted the final Panel Build of 2024, creating panels which will be used in 15 homes being built in northeast Des Moines.
The build was hosted outside of the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity ReStore, where employees of the store and volunteers built 26 exterior wall panels that will be turned into homes.
“It’s always a nice change of pace to do something a little bit different. I think we have some folks that have chilly hands but really warm and fuzzy hearts today,” said Danny Akright the Director of Communications for the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity.
The crews work in three and a half hour shifts over the course of the day. A small group helps set up and cleanup but most of the workers focus on wall building. In total, three to four dozen people will help during Panel Building events.

Last week a Panel Build was hosted at the Urbandale Restore where over 20 interior panels were built. The panels are being constructed for the Carter Court homes — a new development located on the northeast side of Des Moines which will have 15 homes ready for people at the beginning of the year.
Sixteen Panel Builds were hosted this year, contributing to homes being built around the metro. The Panel Builds are expected to start again in April of 2025. However, there are other volunteer opportunities available all year long. Check out the Habitat for Humanity website to learn more.
“Every day that we are selling donated and new merchandise here at the ReStores we are able to take those profits and reinvest them right back into our mission,” said Akright. “Anytime somebody makes a purchase here at the ReStore, they are helping fund homes that we are building, homes that we are repairing, and people that we are helping council on their way to home ownership.”
So far this year the ReStore locations have given $2 million to Habitat for Humanity which is being used to build 36 homes.
