Welshpool construction firm builds on new contracts with more growth planned in 2025

The business has continued to grow and its expansion into the West Midlands with the opening of new offices in Wolverhampton recently marked the end of a first hugely successful year.

It means SWG is now regularly winning new contracts across Wales, Shropshire and the West Midlands and is heavily in demand as the firm continues to expand its already impressive client base.

Jacqui Gough, director of SWG Group, said: “These are exciting times for the company – 2024 has seen continuing business growth and next year is already looking like being another record-breaker for us with a growing number of projects being lined up.

“We have been involved in some high profile contracts in 2024, including the renovation of Wrexham’s historic markets. The multi-million pound project to refurbish the Butchers and General Markets was led by SWG Construction on behalf of Wrexham County Borough Council and was recently completed.

“Also in Wrexham we are working on a major project creating a Football Museum for Wales. It’s taking place in Regent Street on behalf of Wrexham County Borough Council with an opening date set for 2026. The museum will be a celebration of Welsh football, past and present, from its grassroots up to international level.”

Other projects SWG Group has worked on this year include a new cattle-handling facility at Harper Adams University near Newport in Shropshire, involving an extension to the main dairy.

The firm continued its contract to re-roof local authority properties in North Powys on behalf of Powys County Council – the sixth year that SWG has been successful in helping to bring the council’s housing up to Welsh Housing Quality Standard.

In the West Midlands, SWG teams have created a new play barn at Forge Mill Farm and extended Forge Secondary School in West Bromwich, renovated three blocks of flats in Wednesbury, and started a new-build housing scheme to create six new homes in Whitgreave Street, West Bromwich, on behalf of Sandwell Council.

In Shrewsbury the firm is working on a supported housing development at Coton Hill, providing 25 self-contained one-bedroom apartments, while a project to build 14 affordable homes for Connexus housing association in Much Wenlock has recently been completed.

Over the border in Welshpool, SWG has extended Y Lanfa: Powysland Museum and Welshpool Library to create more floor space on both the ground and first floors, refit the first-floor museum space and install a new passenger lift alongside general repairs and other refurbishment works.

Jacqui added: “During this year we joined the North Wales Construction Partnership framework, establishing SWG Group as one of the leading construction companies working across North and Mid Wales – an exciting partnership enabling us to build new contacts.

“In addition to our day-to-day business activities SWG remains totally committed to involvement in the community, supporting charities and other good causes whenever we can.

“We took part in the Dragon Boat Festival in Shrewsbury in July to raise funds for Severn Hospice, and the National Three Peaks Challenge at the end of August in support of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.

“The company and our staff are involved in a range of fundraising activities across the year through a variety of challenges and events – something we are keen to build on in 2025, and we are also continuing our sponsorship of Welshpool Town Football Club.

“It is a partnership that began in 2019 and we have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the club ever since.”
